Pinpoint defective cells by the impedance comparison method.
Just touch cell terminals with leads provided for direct reading of impedance on digital readout. Suitable for all types of batteries especially VRLA sealed batteries. Determing Battery Health! The Battery Health Checker, Model ETMC-BHC/06 is used to check individul batteries. Until recently, the commonly used method to determine battery and cell health was to perform a load test. Although reliable, the method had proven to be cumbersome, time consuming, expensive and risky. An alternative to load testing is the impedance comparison method wherein comparison between individual measured cell impedance and the system average correlates with the ability to predict cell and system performance. The Impedance Method! Any device through which an AC electrical current will flow exhibits an impedance to that flow. Model ETMC-BHC/06 applies a momentary test load and measures the instantaneous AC voltage drop (due to internal resistance). Two comparisons can be made: first the impedance is compared with the last reading for that cell; and second, the reading is compared with other cells in the same bank. Each cell should be within 10% of the others and 5% of its last reading. A reading outside these values indicates a cell problem or capacity loss. There are no set guidelines and limits for this test. Each type, style and configuration of battery has its own impedance, so it is important to take a baseline reading early in the battery's life. IEEE 1188 - 1996 standard specifies that a variation of about 50% from the baseline indicates a potentially defective cell. |
